Stop Running from Challenges!

Stop Running from Challenges!

– I think I should tell some
of my stuff too (laughs). – Oh, go on. – [Holly] Your turn. – My turn? But no, I understand
that because my husband used to tell me all the
time that I was a runner, and I didn’t understand what that meant and why would he say that? And I remember growing up
in a very dysfunctional home even though, like, my father is my world. They are still alive
living strong, you know, doing very well now,
transformed lives years later. But as a child I remember
seeing my dad and my mom go through so many
challenges, like, we wouldn’t even walk on our side of the street. We would walk on the
opposite side of the street because we didn’t want our
friends to hear my parents and their arguing. You know, going at each other. It was just so much
embarrassment and so to me, that created an environment of running. It’s like, I wanna hurry up
and get outta this house, I don’t wanna bring anybody
around because I’m gonna be exposed and they’re gonna
see all of what my family is going through. We’d come out of the house
smiling, looking like everything is healthy and
strong and so when I got married it was like, I always had in
my mind that I don’t have to stay here if it doesn’t work. You know, like, I’ll get out of it. Somebody else will want
me, if you don’t want me, I’m gonna leave. And so when he would tell
me that I was a runner it was offensive in the
beginning, but then it was like I had to own that to say, okay
I’m not running any longer. I’m gonna stand here in the
midst of whatever we’re going through, whatever challenges we’re having. Whether it’s in our communication,
our sex or whatever, it’s like, I’m not gonna run any longer. I gonna to stand in here
and I gonna deal with it because I would rather
run to another room, run out of the house. Let me go just take a ride,
you know, instead of dealing with whatever I’m dealing
with because it was like I was always in protective mode. Like, if you’re not gonna
protect me mom and dad, husband, I’ll protect myself. – [Sheila] Yep. (gentle music) – Hi everybody, I hope
